Antibiotics are undisputedly one of the greatest achievements of medicine. Unfortunately, many gram-negative pathogens have already developed resistance to most antibiotics, and in some cases to all antibiotics in clinical use.

As part of his scientific work, Prof. Dr. Schäberle identified for the first time an inhibitor against a promising membrane protein (BamA) that is responsible for the viability as well as the bacterial pathogenesis of Gram-negative bacteria. This previously unexplored substance can also be biosynthesized by a wide variety of bacteria. Based on this, further natural substances were discovered that can also be used as inhibitors against BamA.

On this basis, an implementation plan was developed as part of the exploratory project, firstly for the development of an innovative antibiotic against multi-resistant gram-negative germs, and secondly for the implementation of a screening platform for further new BamA inhibitors. The project is currently in the feasibility stage.
